Redcliff Municipality proposes 20% assessment rate cut in US$19.4 million budget for 2026

Midlands Bureau

The Municipality of Redcliff is proposing to slash its assessment rates by 20 percent in its US$19,4 million proposed budget for 2026.

In an interview on Friday, Redcliff Municipality public relations manager Mr Michael Magoronga said the move was in response to some ratepayers’ concerns who felt that the current rates were unaffordable.

“As a result, the municipality anticipates a revenue reduction of approximately US$2 million, down from last year’s US$9 million. The 2025 budget stood at US$25 million,” he said.

Mr Magoronga said in the proposed 2026 budget, most of the tariffs will remain unchanged.

He said the municipality has since rolled out its second round of budget consultations, giving stakeholders an opportunity to provide input before the proposed budget is submitted to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works for approval.

“Stakeholders being consulted include SMEs, people living with disabilities, corporates, churches, schools, and other community representatives,” he said.

“Consultations will also be conducted on a ward basis to ensure broad participation and equitable resource allocation across Redcliff.”

Mr Magoronga said copies of the proposed tariffs and charges are displayed for public inspection at all council revenue offices in Redcliff, Rutendo, and Torwood.

“The consultation process will run from October 28 to November 4 2025, and residents are encouraged to actively participate to help ensure fair and transparent distribution of municipal resources,” he said.
