THE Rotary Club of Harare Central has donated reading books to Mariga, Madzima, Mururi and Chikaka primary schools.
Zvimba West Member of Parliament Cde Mercy Dinha said the gesture exemplified President Mnangagwa’s mantra of “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”, which extols everyone to play their part in the country’s development.
Cde Dinha, who is also Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Deputy Minister, was represented by Cde Givemore Zinyemba.
She said the books would keep children busy and away from social vices such as drug and substance abuse.
Rotary Club of Harare Central president Mr Trevor Vambe said books were a gateway to the world for learners in rural schools and would help improve pass rate.
“Books are important in upgrading pass rates in schools in Zvimba. Our mission is to increase the pass rate,” said Mr Vambe.
Chikaka Primary School has improved its pass rate to 50 percent from 25 percent.
“We implore School Development Committees, parents and teachers to work together to improve education. As the Rotary Club of Harare Central we are here to help nurture a reading culture,” he said.
Mariga Primary School headmaster Mr Richard Muronzi said the books will help improve learning outcomes.
Standing in for the district schools inspector Mr Lloyd Mereki said the gesture should be extended to cover schools in resettlement areas .
“The situation in schools in resettlement areas needs urgent attwntion and we hope that the Rotary Club of Harare Central will be able to give support,” said Mr Mereki.
Chikaka Primary School head Mrs Maria Mhlanga welcomed the donation saying it will help improve learning.
