THE 45th Sadc Summit of Heads of State and Government will be held in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on August 17, the bloc’s Secretariat has said.

The gathering of Heads of State will see President Mnangagwa pass the chairmanship of the regional bloc to Madagascar’s Andry Rajoelina, following a successful tenure that saw him championing efforts towards finding lasting peace in Eastern DRC, receiving the Sadc Secretariat Headquarters after its acquisition on behalf of the regional bloc and presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony of the Sadc Regional Logistics Depot in Botswana, among other feats.

Sadc Executive Secretary Mr Elias Magosi arrived in Madagascar on Sunday ahead of the Summit, which will be held under the theme “Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation, and Energy Transition for a Resilient Sadc”.

In a communiqué yesterday, the Sadc Secretariat said the summit will focus on accelerating regional integration through key economic pillars.

“The Southern African Development Community (Sadc) will convene its 45th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on August 17, 2025 at the Ivato Conference Centre in Antananarivo, Republic of Madagascar.

“This marks a historic moment for Madagascar, which became a Member State of Sadc in August 2005.

“The Summit will focus on accelerating regional integration through key pillars: strengthening industrial capacity and regional value chains, modernising agriculture, and promoting an inclusive energy transition, all aimed at building a resilient, sustainable, and cohesive Sadc region,” said the regional bloc.

A Senior Officials and Experts Meeting on the Sadc Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) was held yesterday, while the Sadc Standing Committee of Senior Officials Meeting will be held on Wednesday and the Sadc Council of Ministers Meeting to be convened from August 12 to August 14.

The Sadc-US Dialogue Forum will be held on August 13, the Sadc Public Lecture at the University of Antananarivo on August 14, the Sadc Organ Troika Senior Officials Meeting on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation and the Ministerial Committee of the Sadc Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation on August 15, while the Summit of the Sadc Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation will be held on August 16.

“During the Summit, His Excellency Mr Andry Rajoelina, President of the Republic of Madagascar, will officially assume the SADC Chairpersonship, succeeding His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe,” said the Secretariat.

The 45th Summit of Heads of State will review progress on the implementation of the Sadc Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030, consider the report from the Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation and review achievements under the 44th Summit.
