SCOTTLAND’S rapid rise and heavy investment face their biggest test yet when the Zimbabwean champions take on Kaizer Chiefs at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng near Rustenburg today.
Kick-off is at 3pm.
With their maiden CAF Champions League campaign approaching, Norman Mapeza’s men will use the Toyota Cup encounter to assess whether their domestic success can be carried onto the African stage.
“We are not a big name in African football, but we are ready,” Mapeza said.
“We will be playing in the Champions League in a few months and it is good for us to play against Kaizer Chiefs.
“I also understand Kaizer Chiefs will be playing in the CAF Confederation Cup. We are taking this game as part of our preparations for the upcoming CAF Champions League.”
The match marks a return to familiar territory for Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat, two former Kaizer Chiefs stars who now lead Scottland’s continental ambitions.
The influential duo headline a powerful squad that also includes Ghanaian Issaka Mohammed, Namibia’s Moses Shidolo and Kwake Twala of Eswatini.
Kelvin Moyo, Peter Muduhwa, Mtokozisi Msebe, Emmanuel Jalai and Abubakar Moffat will also have an opportunity to showcase their talent at a stadium that hosted six matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Musona won the South African Premiership Golden Boot during his first spell with Amakhosi, while Billiat later became one of the club’s marquee signings.
Mapeza must now find out how that collection of talent responds against one of Southern Africa’s most recognised clubs.
Chiefs have a long association with Zimbabwean football.
Ebson “Sugar” Muguyo, Luke Petros Jukulile, Tinashe Nengomasha, Willard Katsande, Kingston Nkhatha, Ovidy Karuru, Teenage Hadebe, Zhaimu Jambo, Musona and Billiat are among the Zimbabweans who have represented Amakhosi over the years.
Mapeza, who had a brief spell in South Africa with Ajax Cape Town towards the end of his playing career, acknowledged that history.
“We are honoured to be here and I hope our friendship with Kaizer Chiefs will go as far as it can,” he said.
“Kaizer Chiefs have always been home to many Zimbabweans and I am grateful for that.”
Kaizer Chiefs are also treating the match seriously as they complete preparations for the 2026/2027 Betway Premiership season and their return to continental football.
Amakhosi qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup after finishing third in the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership.
Their new coach, Fernando Da Cruz, views the Scottland encounter as an important final examination before the competitive season begins.
“It’s the last game of our preseason, the last step of our preseason, and it will also be the first meeting with our fans as the new technical team,” the Frenchman said.
Scottland will not be short of support.
About 40km from Phokeng lies Koster, a farming town with a strong Zimbabwean community.
Many of the Zimbabweans based there are truck drivers, while others, like football enthusiast Tatenda Mugurasawe, have followed Scottland’s rise from a distance.
They rarely get an opportunity to watch Zimbabwean top-flight football because of their location and the Premier Soccer League’s absence from DStv’s SuperSport channels.
Today’s match has brought the Zimbabwean champions to their doorstep.
“When you are in the diaspora, you are always following what is happening back home,” said Mugurasawe, who has lived in that part of South Africa for the past 18 years.
“We are always following our Zimbabwean league and we are seeing some progress. Scottland have brought a lot of changes to our football back home.
“The owner, Pedzai Scott Sakupwanya, has injected a lot of money into football and Scottland have managed to assemble a strong squad that includes players from the region.
“I think this has made Scottland appeal to the neutrals.”
Scottland’s arrival at the top of Zimbabwean football has attracted attention beyond the country’s borders, with supporters around Koster planning to travel to Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
“This is a good initiative by Scottland and I think they have the capacity to do well in the CAF Champions League,” Mugurasawe said.
“We have been talking about this match between Kaizer Chiefs and Scottland. We are going to Royal Bafokeng in numbers.
“I think today will be a great day.”
Philip Chiwara is among those who have been mobilising support for Mabviravira.
“We don’t get to watch the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League because we can’t access it on SuperSport, so this is a great chance for us to support our own local boys,” he said.
“Credit goes to Scottland for accepting this invitation.”
For Scottland, the Toyota Cup is more than a preseason fixture.
It is a chance to test their squad, measure their ambitions and find out whether they are ready for the demands of African football.
