A Spotlight Initiative which assists women and girls fight gender based violence hosted its Zumba session at the Harare Art Gallery on Saturday.
Themed: ‘Zumba Shacking Off GBV’, the session was attended by women from different Civil Society Organisations with a collective role to end all forms of GBV.
The second edition was hosted under the auspices that the fight against GBV must be an everyday activity and not only reserved during the 16 Days of Activism.
“As we are coming to the tail of the Spotlight Initiative which was launched in 2019, we thought of hosting the Zumba Shacking off GBV because after being frustrated one needs an avenue to offload the pain
“We are using the Zumba to come together as men and women in mitigating GBV in our homes and work spaces,” said leader of the Civil Society Reference Group, Audrey Charamba.
Charamba said all civil society players must have a voice in the fight against GBV.
“We are participating on the context that all our players should have a voice and participate actively in mitigating GBV,” said Charamba.
She said the organization also believes that GBV is not only fought during the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism but an everyday life that most women are dealing with.
The Zumba session was attended by women and men from Shamwari Yemwasikana, SAYWHAT, YET and SASA among other Zumba enthusiasts.
As part of the initiative, Shamwari Yemwanasikana has been raising awareness against GBV in young girls.
The organisation says it has been receiving a number of cases where young teenage girls have either been violated sexually or victims in a relationship with older man.
The combination of dance and aerobics was led by popular choreographer, Zoro.
The Spotlight Initiative was launched in 2019 through a joint initiative by the European Union, United Nations and the Government of Zimbabwe.
The initiative is now reaching its tail end since the agreement was meant to last for five years.
