Producer and singer Wendell ‘Kiid Angel’ Lipepe has joined forces with fellow artist Ashley ‘Boxxy’ Ncube in a heartfelt cover song, dedicated to the late Gary Mapanzure as a tribute to his memory.
The song is Mapanzare’s cover song, Winner. Kiid Angel, who is also a producer and keyboardist, stated that the song is in honour of Mapanzure, who tragically lost his life in a road accident on October 13, 2023, at the age of 23.
This release comes shortly after Kiid Angel received nominations for four continental awards in Ghana and Nigeria. Both artists come from Matabeleland and are determined to show the world the impact of music.
The 24-year-old expressed that the song, titled “Winner,” holds significant personal meaning for him.“I once stood in the spotlight, but then the light was dimmed. I became a source of laughter in town. I know what it feels like to be among the best producers, only to wake up one morning feeling like I have nothing left, just holding on,” he said.
He also stated that the song motivated him. “This song became my anthem, motivating me with the belief that one day I will rise again. I know things might not be great right now, but I am a winner.” He said the inspiration to create this tribute song came after hearing the news of Gary Mapanzure’s passing.
“After the death, Ashley joined me in the studio and encouraged me to produce the tribute. The whole purpose behind releasing this track is to send a message about the impact of music.
“Gary Mapanzure is receiving a tribute all the way from Filabusi and Matabeleland. “This is also a reminder that no matter what you face in life, you will eventually overcome,” he said.
He also said that the cover song will be released on January 30. “I contributed as both the producer and writer of the song.
“We united our talents from Matabeleland, and this will be followed by an EP titled Pretty Girl Marly, set to drop in March.” Ashley added that the collaboration signifies the impact of music. When I heard about his death, I was approaching a talent competition in my area. This song has always served as a constant reminder that I can achieve anything, and I decided to create something to honour him.”
Kiid Angel began playing the piano at the age of eight, nurturing his passion for music over the years. He has collaborated with experienced artists such as Joe Maseko, Bobolex, and Cherry C, which has further honed his skills.
