So Sweet brings the Pumpkin Spice Latte to Bulawayo

THE arrival of autumn was once marked by falling leaves and a crisp chill in the air, but now a single beverage has become the season’s defining symbol: the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

More than just a drink, this sweet, cinnamon-laced creation has evolved into a global cultural phenomenon, driving consumer trends and sparking seasonal excitement. Its story, however, is surprisingly recent.

The Pumpkin Spice Latte was born in 2003 in the research and development labs of Starbucks in Seattle. Peter Dukes, then director of espresso at Starbucks, led a team tasked with creating a new seasonal beverage to follow the success of winter favourites like the Peppermint Mocha.

The team explored dozens of ideas, focusing on flavours that evoked the warmth of autumn and the nostalgia of Thanksgiving. Initially, pumpkin was not the leading contender; chocolate and caramel combinations seemed more promising.

Yet, test audiences responded strongly to the comforting spices of pumpkin pie. The team blended espresso, steamed milk, and a signature pumpkin-spice syrup infused with cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, topping it with whipped cream and a sprinkle of spice.

The result was a drink that captured the essence of autumn in a coffee cup.
The Pumpkin Spice Latte was first tested in a handful of stores in Vancouver and Washington DC, where its instant popularity prompted a rapid nationwide rollout in the United States and Canada the following year.

It quickly became one of Starbucks’ most requested seasonal items, and over the past two decades, the drink has undergone subtle changes. For years, its flavour came solely from the spice blend, with no actual pumpkin.

In 2015, responding to customer feedback and a growing demand for natural ingredients, Starbucks reformulated the recipe to include real pumpkin purée.

What began as a niche product rooted in American traditions soon crossed continents, adapting to diverse palates and climates, and cementing its status as a universal autumn staple.

The genius of the Pumpkin Spice Latte lies in its ability to evoke nostalgia.
It capitalises on the emotional pull of seasonal comfort and tradition, transforming a simple coffee purchase into a highly anticipated annual ritual.

Today, its influence extends far beyond coffee shops, inspiring everything from scented candles to baked goods, and even fashion trends.

For coffee lovers in Bulawayo, the global demand for this iconic drink means it is now closer than ever.
