Speeding bus knocks pedestrian dead, injures 18 passengers

A SUSPECTED drunkard who was allegedly walking in the middle of the Harare–Mutare highway was knocked dead by a bus last night, prompting the bus to veer off the road, roll several times and injure 18 passengers.
The accident occurred at Reeb Business Centre around 11pm when the pedestrian (name withheld pending notification of the next of kin) was hit by a Mutare‑bound General Bande bus, which was allegedly speeding.
The bus, carrying 65 passengers, landed on its side and sustained minor damages.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka referred questions to National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who was not reachable.
Rusape General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Stewart Karembo said one person died, four were seriously injured and transferred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, while 14 remain admitted at the hospital.
“From the accident you are referring to, one person died on the spot. Four were in critical condition and we transferred them to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, and 14 other victims are admitted at Rusape General Hospital. The rest of the passengers were assessed and released,” said Dr Karembo.
