ABOUT 5,000 gospel music fans gathered at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre in Bulawayo for a sold-out performance by South African gospel group, Spirit of Praise.
The concert, held on Sunday evening, marked SOP’s second appearance in the city following a successful visit the previous year. The group attracted an even bigger audience eager to witness the local launch of the Spirit of Praise Volume 11 project. The event began at 6pm with Mbo Mahocs serving as the master of ceremonies, effectively engaging the crowd and introducing the various performances. Local gospel acts, including Vocal Base, Vocal Ex, and Dunamis Men, performed as warm-up acts to energise the audience. Vocal Ex received particular acclaim, performing popular covers that resonated well with the attendees.
At around 7:30pm, the main SOP ensemble took to the stage.
It consisted of notable artists such as Ayanda Ntanzi, Dumi Mkokstad, Lufuno Dagada, Mpumi Mtsweni, Omega Khunou, Sindi Ntombela, Xola Toto, and veteran vocalist Zaza Mokhethi. The inclusion of Zimbabwean gospel stars Everton Mlalazi and Canaan Nyathi further highlighted the collaboration and support within the gospel music community.
Pastor Mthunzi Namba graced the event as the guest of honour.
Sindi Ntombela opened with her powerful singing and ministry, performing beloved songs like “Let Your Living Waters Flow” – a joint that resonated with the audience.
Xola Toto, recognised for her impressive vocal control, showcased her new song “Speak Lord,” garnering admiration from the crowd.
Zaza Mokhethi’s performance of “Namhla Nkosi” evoked nostalgia, connecting the audience to SOP’s roots, while Mpumi Mtsweni’s renditions included her signature song “Nangu Mthokozisi,” which was fans’ favourite.
The atmosphere was further elevated when Pastor Mthunzi Namba led the crowd in song as he belted out “Sweet Jesus,” enhancing the celebratory and worshipping spirit of the evening.
Lufuno Dagada delighted the audience with songs in Venda and Shona, demonstrating the group’s commitment to cultural inclusivity. Ayanda Ntanzi, Dumi Mkokstad and Canaan Nyath’s performances couldn’t go unnoticed as they were amongst favourites. Mlalazi brought his magic to the show as he performed a rendition of the song Ndinomira Pa Jordani which he sang partly in Ndebele and Shona. He also performed the song Ekhaya.
“Being part of Spirit of Praise has been nothing short of transformative,” said Mlalazi.
“I’ve witnessed immense spiritual, musical, and personal growth, that added to the invaluable relationships formed is quite phenomenal.
“SOP is a family that values excellence, unity, and the pursuit of God’s presence, and being surrounded by such gifted and disciplined ministers has stretched and sharpened me in the best ways.
“It’s also an honour that we came back to my home town and we delivered a great performance”.
