PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has accorded media personality, cultural icon and socialite Babongile Sikhonjwa a State-assisted funeral in recognition of his contribution to Zimbabwe’s arts and culture industry.

The announcement was made yesterday by the Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, during a prayer service held at the Sikhonjwa family home in Richmond.

Minister Ncube revealed that the Government has contributed US$10,000 to support funeral logistics and arrangements.

Babo, who was also a Star FM presenter, died in Bulawayo on Sunday.

He was 49.

“We have been sent to deliver a message to the family following the death of our friend, a friend of the nation.

“The President saw it appropriate to express our collective grief following the passing of Babongile.

“This is the message we bring, condolences from the President and the people of Zimbabwe,” said Min Ncube.

She added:

“Through his tireless efforts, we see him as a hero. He used his talent to inspire, empower and connect people. It is only fitting that he receives this honour.”

Today, a memorial service will be held at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre.

After the service, Babo’s body will be transported to his rural home in Mlowezi, Gwanda District, ahead of his burial tomorrow.
