‘Stop exploiting Madzibaba Zakaria’

H-Metro Reporter

POPULAR sungura musician, Alick Macheso is not happy with individuals including socialites and fellow artists who are using Nicholas ‘Madzibaba’ Zakaria’s ailment for their personal gain.

Macheso, in an interview with H-Metro on the sidelines of his performance at Werras Park in Glen View, expressed concern with videos and pictures of the unwell Zakaria that have lately gone viral on social media.

“It seems most of these people are doing it for their own mileage and their personal gains. I have seen videos and pictures of different people, some from our industry (music) and I always ask myself the motive behind that,” said Macheso.

“The sad part is that others are going with just a case of water, baba takuigirai mvura vakutotora mifananidzo vokanda pasocial media.

“We need to reflect as fellow musicians or fans, kuti tiri kupa chimiro chipi, tiri kuratidza hunhu hupi. It’s a situation that has been troubling me and now that you have asked it, I think it is important for me to say it out,” added Macheso.

H-Metro gathered that Macheso has been contributing towards Madzibaba’s welfare since he announced his illness.

Macheso acknowledged assisting Zakaria, who is his mentor, but refused to disclose details of the monthly packages.

“I always visit him, to check on him and assist and contribute towards his welfare. But I felt there is no need to pose for pictures and show the world.

“I don’t need the world to know that I am taking care of my father, it is just my responsibility. Mdhara Zakaria took me when I was only 15 years, vese namaiguru, vakandirera kusvika ndava chigondora. He took me through the ropes to be the musician I am today.

“So, for me like any other child who was raised well, it’s payback time. Vakuru vakati chirere chigokurerawo,” said Macheso.

Macheso also spoke against the idea of pushing Madzibaba Zakaria back on stage – describing it as a premature decision.

Senior Lecturer, as Zakaria is also referred to, staged two shows in Kadoma and Chegutu last month, a move that was welcomed by fans.

Macheso, as someone closely monitoring the situation, said it is too early for Zakaria to resume live performances.

Ndakaona vachiita mashows recently. I don’t think it’s good for his health. My advice to those who are working closely with him in that area to give time to recover because I don’t see the need to rush him.”
