IF the internet was to be taken away, some students wouldn’t be able to think for themselves, or, at the very least, produce an acceptable assignment or presentation.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is reshaping the way students learn and interact with information.

While AI offers numerous benefits, it’s crucial for students to approach this technology with a discerning mindset.

One thing that we should not ignore is that AI is within us, it will be with us or even overtake us.

Indeed, it has become a daily resource.

In 2023, I wrote something about technology in academics, under a topic, “When technology gives birth to lazy, gullible students”.

In that article I explored that, the students should be careful not to be too reliant on copy pasting.

Once they depend more on it, they become lazy and gullible.

It will be easy to lose innovative, creative and critical thinkers in that context.

However, two years later, the issue remains topical and relevant.

This week, I am complementing the issue of AI as a welcomed baby, but there is need for discernment.

From what I see in many cases, most students are no longer using their brains and now resorting to AI.

I have many times, said, there are some students who still have brand new brains since they were born as they are not using them.

And now, with this new monster, most of them will die with brand new brains.

Some have become masters of copying and pasting.

The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size.

Every student should embrace AI while also cultivating their ability to think independently and critically.

The convenience of AI mostly encourages laziness in some students.

Instead of engaging deeply with materials, students are now opting for quick answers provided by AI tools.

This tendency is hindering their ability to analyse, synthesise and apply knowledge effectively.

The way it is being used then distorts the whole concept of research.

Students should wholeheartedly welcome AI as a powerful ally in their educational journey. However, it’s essential to pilot this landscape thoughtfully.

By balancing the benefits of AI with critical thinking and ethical considerations, students can harness its potential while developing the skills necessary for success in an increasingly digital world.

When students become accustomed to relying on the internet for every academic challenge, they end up struggling when faced with tasks that require personal initiative and problem-solving skills.

While the internet offers numerous benefits in education, it is posing laziness among students as they are not thoughtful in moderation.

The integration of AI into academics has opened up a world of opportunities for students.

From personalised learning experiences to enhanced research capabilities, AI can significantly enrich the educational landscape.

With great power comes great responsibility, it’s important for students to be cognisant of using their potential adding value from AI.

In most cases, AI tailors educational content to meet individual students’ learning style and pace.

This personalisation helps students grasp concepts more effectively, enabling them to understand deeply.

AI tools should assist students in conducting research more efficiently, not do the whole task for them.

With the ability to quickly sift through vast amounts of data, AI can identify relevant sources, summarise information, and even suggest new research directions.

This not only saves time but also encourages a more thorough exploration of topics.

AI technologies help improve accessibility for students with disabilities and other challenges.

While AI is a helpful resource, students are becoming overly reliant on it.

This dependence is hindering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as students are opting for AI-generated answers rather than engaging deeply with the material.

Without proper guidance, students are falling into the trap of accepting AI outputs at face value. This gullibility is leading to superficial understanding and a lack of discernment when evaluating information.

Students must learn to critically assess AI-generated content, distinguishing between valuable insights and inaccuracies.

Some of the assignments that are being written by students are simply the same since there is no effort being put.

The use of AI in academics continues to raise ethical questions regarding plagiarism and academic integrity.

If students use AI to produce work without proper attribution or understanding, it certainly undermines the educational process.

It’s crucial for students to instill a sense of responsibility when carrying out their research.

Welcoming AI into academics offers tremendous potential to enhance learning experiences, but it also requires a balanced approach.

Students must take on this landscape with caution, ensuring that AI serves as a tool for growth rather than a crutch that stifles intellectual development.

Critical thinking should remain the cornerstone of academics.

As it stands, education and technology now coexist harmoniously.

Students should welcome AI as a valuable ally in their academic pursuits, but they must also commit to using their brains.

Let the students balance the advantages of AI with the necessity of critical thinking.

I have no problem with all students harnessing the power of technology so that they enhance their learning but should avoid the pitfalls of complacency.

As we embark on the journey of embracing the digital age, the ability to think critically and engage deeply with knowledge will be our greatest asset.

Ultimately, the goal should be to use AI not as a crutch, but as a springboard for intellectual growth and discovery.
