VETERAN saxophonist Phillip Svosve has thrown his full weight behind the son of the late James Chimombe, who is pursuing his musical career in South Africa.
It’s now 35 years since Chimombe’s death.
Svosve has expressed his enduring affection for the late crooner and his family, particularly his children.
One of those children, Davitah Chimombe, is poised to benefit from Svosve’s mentorship as he pursues his musical career in South Africa.
Currently on vacation back home, Davitah is set to meet with Svosve, who has offered his support to the rising star.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Svosve shared his desire to help Davitah. “I have been in contact with Davitah, who has been thriving musically in South Africa. It’s heartening to see his desire to revive the Ocean City Band,” Svosve said.
“While I have formed my own group, I remain available to support him.
“It’s refreshing to witness the son of my friend honouring his father’s legacy
in this way.
“His actions demonstrate professionalism and respect for his elders, even after his father’s passing.”
Svosve, who worked closely with Chimombe in the 1980s, highlighted his deep connection to Davitah’s family.
“I was not only a good friend to Jimmy but also his uncle, which has strengthened our bond beyond that of mere band members.
“It is now my responsibility to assist his son and I plan to contribute a song to his upcoming album while sharing insights as he works to revive the Ocean City Band,” he said.
Having transitioned from bass guitar to saxophone, Svosve reflected on Chimombe’s immense talent.
“I will certainly pass on the same skills to his son. Culturally, he is our son, and we must nurture him to fulfill his father’s wishes. We want to see his legacy continue.”
Davitah, excited about collaborating with his uncle, expressed his gratitude for Svosve’s guidance.
“I came home specifically for this project. I seek the blessings of my uncle, Elder Phillip Svosve, who worked closely with my dad.
“I want to gain insights from him as I strive to revive the Ocean City Band.”
He acknowledged that while some founding members have died, Svosve’s mentorship makes success attainable.
“We are composing a song together and I hope his guidance will help me make a memorable impact in this field,” he said.
Davitah, whose strengths lie in vocal progression and song writing, called on Zimbabweans to embrace him.
“I have been well received in South Africa, and I hope for the same support from my homeland.
“We aim to defy the notion that ‘a prophet has no honour in his homeland.’ I believe I can succeed if I stay focused on my career.”
With a series of shows planned in Johannesburg and Cape Town, he is determined to conquer his home turf.
“I am ready to accomplish this mission with the support of various stakeholders. I also intend to build on my father’s success, as his music remains popular, especially among fans of old-school sounds.”
Currently, Davitah is in the studio working on a new album titled “Jikinya Memories,” set for release early next month.
He has recorded singles including “Moyo Wangu,” “Chitima CheNjanja,” and “Usaende.”
It remains to be seen if he can evolve and meet the expectations of fans who cherished classics like “Cecilia,” “Munakandafa,” and “Jemedza.”
Davitah’s quest to revive the Ocean City Band follows the attempts of his late brother, Freddy Chimombe, who passed away in 2012.
Now, the ball is in the courts of Davitah and his sister Tendai to keep the fire burning.
