THE best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
When we focus on the needs of others, we can gain insight into our own values and purpose.
Indeed, when students come together, they create a powerful force capable of bringing positive change both on and off campus.
Every moment students unite, they amplify their voices, as author Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”.
By supporting one another, students can tackle challenges more effectively, share resources and celebrate each other’s successes.
Competition exists at campuses, but there is need for students to support each other for everyone to stay afloat.
This week, I am encouraging students to be selfless as they take on the academic journey.
I have noted of late that some students fight each other and even wish some students fail or lose the battle against winning the academic race.
The bonds formed through unity and selflessness often extend beyond graduation.
I always tell my fellow learners that there is life at college and there is life after campus. This means the relationships we create at campus go beyond.
The friendships built during these formative years normally evolve into lifelong connections.
Poet Maya Angelou wisely noted, “I have learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
The feelings of support, camaraderie and shared purpose create lasting memories and networks that can benefit students throughout their lives.
Fellow students, to be selfless and united is not just an ideal, but it is a necessity for nurturing a supportive and thriving educational environment.
When students adopt a mindset of selflessness, they cultivate a culture of kindness and empathy.
This is particularly crucial in diverse educational institutions where varying perspectives can either divide or unite.
The need for unity extends beyond the classroom.
Students have a unique opportunity to impact their communities positively.
Whether through volunteer work, advocacy, or social initiatives, collective action can help address pressing social issues.
Engaging in community service not only benefits those in need but also enriches the students’ experience.
It helps foster a sense of responsibility, reinforcing the idea that they are part of something greater than themselves.
When students collaborate on service projects, they learn vital skills such as leadership, teamwork and problem-solving, all while making a meaningful difference.
The essence of student life lies in the power of unity and selflessness.

Off-campus, the challenges can multiply, with financial burdens, mental health issues, and personal crises affecting many.
Regrettably, some students react to their colleagues’ struggles with judgment rather than empathy.
Instead of offering help, they may laugh or dismiss those who are finding it difficult to cope.
This behaviour not only harms individuals but also brings a culture of division and loneliness.
Imagine a campus where students actively seek to uplift one another.
When students shift their focus from their own problems to the needs of those around them, they create a supportive atmosphere that benefits everyone.
Volunteering to organise peer mentoring sessions or simply offering a listening ear can make a significant difference.
Engaging in acts of kindness helps forge connections and build friendships.
As students assist others, they discover strengths they didn’t know they had and gain a deeper understanding of their own values.
The act of service becomes a pathway to self-discovery, allowing students to define themselves not just by their grades or social status, but by their compassion and commitment to their community.
The journey of self-discovery is rarely a solitary one. By accepting the spirit of service, students can transform their campus into a supportive haven where everyone feels valued and understood.
