As we reflect on the significance of Father’s Day, recently celebrated, we are reminded of the profound impact fathers and father figures have on our lives. Their leadership, guidance and unwavering support shape families.

In the quest to build strong, harmonious relationships, it is essential to recognise the role men play in fostering a nurturing environment and strong happy marriage. The biblical narrative of the Proverbs 31 woman offers valuable insights into the kind of man who would be worthy of such a remarkable partner.

The Proverbs 31 woman exudes virtue, diligence, and wisdom that I can’t help but admire. Aiwa ndi amai vakarongeka! However, the passage subtly implies that behind every Proverbs 31 woman stands a man, who not only appreciates her value, but also embodies qualities that complement and support her remarkable attributes.

The question then arises: What kind of man would be worthy of such a woman? What attributes would he possess to create a relationship that flourishes?

While Proverbs 31 primarily focuses on the woman, hints about her husband’s character can be inferred. For instance, the passage mentions that “her husband is respected at the city gate” (Proverbs 31:23), suggesting that he is a leader, a man of integrity, and someone who commands respect in his community.

By embracing the qualities of a Proverbs 31 husband, men can be the amazing “unsung heroes” behind their remarkable women, building strong, loving relationships that thrive on mutual respect, trust and support.

This week we explore what it means to be a Proverbs 31 husband in the modern era and share practical insights on how men can cultivate these qualities to build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

I find that in a world where relationships are often tumultuous and marriages are tested daily, it is refreshing to revisit the timeless wisdom of the Bible, so we will share some scriptures for further reading.

While going through my book collection I came across a booklet distributed decades ago by the Worldwide Church of God titled: “How to Have a Happy Marriage.” A chapter written by Ronald D Kelly, titled ‘The Proverbs 31 Husband!’ sheds light on a crucial aspect of relationships often overlooked: the role of the husband, challenging men to reflect on the kind of man who deserves a Proverbs 31 woman.

It says:”What man wouldn’t want a fantastic wife like the woman described in Chapter 31 of …. Proverbs? But what kind of man deserves such a woman? She is capable, yet submissive to her husband. She is intelligent, yet clothed with humility.”

“ Men, it’s high time to stop worrying about where this wonderful wife is and become far more concerned about becoming a Proverbs 31 husband. In fact, if there were more Proverbs 31 husbands, there would be more Proverbs 31 wives!” It further states that the Proverbs 31 husband “provides an environment in which his wife can reach her full capabilities.”

Indeed the Proverbs 31 woman is a one of noble character, who “works with eager hands” (Proverbs 31:13), “watches over the affairs of her household” (Proverbs 31:27), and “opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy” (Proverbs 31:20). In all her achievements she has her husband’s support. So what kind of man would be worthy of such a remarkable woman?

Ephesians provides guidance for husbands, instructing them to “love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). The message is clear. This selfless, sacrificial love is the foundation upon which a strong marriage is built.

Some qualities that a Proverbs 31 husband would possess include:

Leadership: Make no mistake, this husband is a confident leader who takes responsibility for his family, leading with wisdom and integrity.

Love: A deep, unconditional love for his wife, demonstrated through actions and words.

Respect: A husband who commands respect in his community and who honours and respects his wife, valuing her contributions and opinions.

Support: A partner who encourages and supports his wife’s goals, aspirations, and passions so that she flourishes.

This paints a beautiful picture of a husband and wife who love, respect and complement each other. How remarkable is that!

When author and relationship expert Gary Chapman notes, “The key to a happy marriage is not finding the right person, but being the right person,” it is a profound truth- a truth often overlooked in the pursuit of the ‘perfect’ partner. However, focusing on becoming the right person, is a key quality men can use to build a strong foundation for a happy and fulfilling marriage.

The Proverbs 31 woman is a treasure, but needs a man with a heart of gold, who will love, support and cherish her. A man not intimidated by her dynamic self, her focus, business acumen and home management.

In conclusion, men, whether still searching, or already in marriage be encouraged to consider moving your focus from wondering where to find a Proverbs 31 woman and rather work on becoming a Proverbs 31 husband.

By developing the qualities outlined above and striving to be the right person, you will not only deserve a wonderful wife but also build a strong, lasting marriage.

I would love to hear from you! Share your thoughts on what it means to you to be a Proverbs 31 husband or wife. What qualities do you think are essential for a happy marriage?
