Third worker dies after Morton Jaffray accident

A THIRD Harare City Council employee has died following this morning’s accident at the Morton Jaffray Water Works near Norton, the second fatal workplace incident involving council staff in three months.

The City of Harare has confirmed that a third employee, who had been rushed to hospital after the incident, was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Following up on the statement we issued regarding the unfortunate loss of two employees at Morton Jaffray Water Works this morning, we regret to inform residents that a third employee was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital,” said the city in a statement.

Earlier, the city had reported the deaths of two workers who were operating on a decommissioned clarifier when the accident occurred.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Police attended the scene, and the city said it was fully cooperating with ongoing inquiries.

The latest fatalities come barely three months after two sewage works attendants died at the Firle treatment plant in Glen View on August 28, reportedly after inhaling hydrogen sulphide while carrying out maintenance duties.

That incident triggered a probe by the National Social Security Authority.

Firle — the city’s largest wastewater treatment plant — handles sewage from across Greater Harare and produces hazardous gases such as methane, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia and carbon dioxide, which can cause explosions or asphyxiation.
