THE Lady Chevrons sank deeper into trouble at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier after a five-wicket defeat to Scotland yesterday.
It was their third straight loss in a campaign, which is quickly turning into a nightmare.
They won the toss, chose to bat, and still folded for 101 in 18.4 overs, a total that never looked close to enough once the early wickets started falling and the innings lost all shape.
Zimbabwe’s top order failed again, with Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano and Beloved Biza contributing just eight runs each as Scotland’s bowlers squeezed the scoring and forced mistakes.
Modester Mupachikwa tried to hold the innings together with 30 off 40 balls, but Zimbabwe never built the partnerships needed to give their bowlers something realistic to defend.
Chiedza Dhururu added 22, while Kelis Ndlovu made 11 before a run out ended her stay, another messy moment in an innings full of broken momentum.
The collapse was brutal in the middle, with Loreen Tshuma, Adel Zimunhu and Audrey Mazvishaya all dismissed for ducks as Scotland’s attack tore through Zimbabwe’s lower order.
Kathryn Bryce, Rachel Slater and Abtaha Maqsood led the demolition job, each taking two wickets as Zimbabwe’s batting card turned into a string of short stays and wasted deliveries.
With only 101 on the board, Zimbabwe’s bowlers needed early strikes and near perfect control, but Scotland’s chase never felt under serious pressure as the target was knocked off with time and wickets to spare.
Katherine Fraser anchored the response with 44 off 30 balls, setting the tone at the top and ensuring Scotland stayed ahead of the required rate from the start.
She was backed by captain Kathryn Bryce, who struck 23 off 13 balls before she was bowled by Tshuma, the one Zimbabwe bowler who found rhythm on a difficult afternoon.
Tshuma finished with three wickets, but even that spell could not rescue Zimbabwe once the damage had been done with the bat.
It was the first competitive meeting between Zimbabwe and Scotland, and the difference was clear, Scotland were calmer, cleaner, and far more ruthless in the key moments.
The result leaves the Lady Chevrons staring at a disappointing tournament start after earlier defeats to the Netherlands and Thailand, with confidence now fragile and their margin for error almost gone.
Before the Scotland match, coach Walter Chawaguta told Zimpapers Sports Hub he wanted his players to be more aggressive, especially in the power play, but Zimbabwe again looked hesitant and paid for it.
Zimbabwe now head into their final match against Nepal needing a response, not just in result, but in intent, as they try to salvage pride and restore belief in a campaign that has slipped badly off course.
