PERSONNEL and officers from the country’s Air Force Bases converged in Kadoma for this year’s week-long Inter-Air Force Base 23-discipline sporting extravaganza on Friday.
The participants were drawn from Harare’s Manyame Air Force Base, Josiah Tungamirai, formerly known as Thornhill Airbase in Gweru, and the host, Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo.
Air Force Commander, Air Marshal Jacob Nzvede officiated at the closing ceremony of the annual event, where he also handed over awards to outstanding teams and persons.
He said the sporting gala was an important event on the Air Force calendar.
“This is an important event as it plays a critical part in the mental and physical well-being of the forces. It also helps in the fight against drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Air Marshal Dzvede added they had made participation in sports an integral part of work routines with every Wednesday afternoon having been set aside for all personnel to participate in organised sports.
“As a way of encouraging full participation, competitions are organised. Competitions start at the inter-wing level, where various wings within the bases compete against each other.
Thereafter, Inter-Mess competitions are held from these competitions each base selects its best players to represent them at the Inter-Base Sports Competitions.”
The grand sporting event consists of 23 sporting disciplines, including football, netball, tug of war, marathon, golf, squash, basketball, handball, volleyball, chess, shooting, snooker, darts and others.
