CONTROVERSY seems to follow Zimdancehall chanter Hulengende like his shadow, with reports of recent accidents and claims that he has fathered a child outside his marriage, keeping his name in the public conversation even as his songs continue to attract attention on social media and YouTube.
Whether it is the drama surrounding his personal life or the growing appeal of his music, Hulengende has become a name that followers of the genre are increasingly watching.
As the year draws to a close, the chanter has another reason to celebrate: his songs have reportedly surpassed five-million-view mark across various digital platforms, underscoring the growing appetite for his work.
The developments have placed Hulengende at an interesting crossroads in his career, where public curiosity and musical ambition move side by side. In Zimbabwe’s fiercely competitive Zimdancehall industry, where artistes battle for attention through online engagement and live performances, staying relevant can be as challenging as producing a hit. Hulengende, however, appears to have found a way to keep his name circulating.
His growing catalogue includes tracks such as Bhura Dhanzi, Chingonzwisisisa Babe, Waponda Moyo, Ibvai, Zunza Mupunduru, Kwadabuka, Hovo Mupovo and PaGorogota.
This body of work has helped establish a recognisable identity for the chanter, giving his supporters several tracks to connect with rather than leaving his musical footprint tied to a single release. His latest offering, Zunza Mupunduru, is adding fresh energy to his campaign, with its danceable sound offering potential appeal to club goers and enthusiasts alike.
The alleged developments in his private life have also placed him under the spotlight, although such claims should be treated with caution unless independently confirmed.
Public attention can quickly become a double-edged sword, particularly when personal matters begin competing with an artiste’s creative output. For now, the strongest measure of his progress is the audience he is building.
Music follower Kuda Rukanda believes the chanter’s consistency is helping him establish a firm presence in the genre.
“What makes Hulengende exciting is the consistency. He has several songs that people are enjoying, and that shows he is building a name for himself rather than depending on one hit,” he said.
Constance Maribha believes the latest single could further strengthen his popularity.
“Zunza Mupunduru has the energy of a club banger. It is the kind of song that gets people moving, and if he keeps releasing music like this, he can reach an even bigger audience,” she said. Ever Takawira added that the musician should capitalise on his current momentum to build a sustainable career.
“Hulengende has a good opportunity to take his music to another level. He needs to remain consistent and continue giving fans songs they can enjoy. That is how he can maintain his position in the industry,” he said.
Their views point to a bigger question facing the chanter: can he turn online attention into a lasting musical brand? YouTube views and social media engagement help artistes reach listeners beyond Zimbabwe, attract promoters and create opportunities for live performances.
However, online numbers alone do not automatically translate into commercial success or a durable fan base. Sustaining that growth requires strong production, effective promotion, regular releases and performances that demonstrate an ability to command an audience beyond the digital space. As the year-end period approaches, Hulengende has an opportunity to consolidate the attention surrounding his catalogue, push Zunza Mupunduru further, and demonstrate that his growing digital audience can translate into a stronger presence on the local entertainment circuit.
