CHAOS at Trabablas Interchange caused by commuter omnibuses picking up and dropping off passengers at undesignated points, as well as vendors operating at the interchange, has caught the attention of Parliament, with legislators calling for immediate measures to address the situation.
Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Hurungwe East Chenjerai Kangausaru raised the issue during Wednesday’s National Assembly question-and-answer session, asking what was being done to address the disorder.
He said the chaos was disrupting the smooth flow of traffic along the Masvingo highway. Responding to the question, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona acknowledged the chaos, saying some people had lost their lives because of the disorder at the interchange.
“Indeed, there are now vending sites at Trabablas and people are losing their lives there, which is a sad situation. People are now using undesignated areas to cross and move around,” he said.
Minister Mhona said people were shunning designated points and ranks constructed and manned by local authorities in favour of undesignated areas.
“There is a place near Trabablas that was constructed by the Council of Harare which is supposed to be a picking and dropping point, but people are leaving those designated points and going to areas that are not, which is causing people to lose their lives,” he said.
“So, people should go to designated areas where they are supposed to be picked or dropped off so that we do not have issues of people losing their lives when they are picked up from dangerous and undesignated points.
“We now see people vending along that interchange, which has now become a problem, particularly when they are hit by vehicles travelling along that road.”
