TRAFFIC congestion during peak hours along Seke Road is set to ease as authorities implement new measures to enhance traffic flow.
In a statement, Nomore Phiri, chairperson of the Harare Traffic Liaison Committee, announced that double lanes will be established at various controlled points along the busy road.
During a traffic control and safety awareness campaign held yesterday along Seke Road, Phiri said congestion during peak hours remains a major concern.
“The increasing volume of traffic along Seke Road has become a significant concern,” he said.
“This congestion reflects the growing population in Chitungwiza, Seke, Dema, and the new residential stands in the Manyame Rural District.”
To mitigate these challenges, the police, in collaboration with the Harare District Traffic Liaison Committee, will manage traffic during peak hours.
“We have requested that law enforcement allow some motorists to utilise double lanes at designated points twice or thrice during peak hours.
“Our goal is to facilitate smoother traffic flow,” Phiri said.
He urged motorists to remain patient and avoid creating ‘imaginary lanes’ that could worsen the situation.
Phiri highlighted the importance of responsible driving.
“Today, we are here to address the urgent issue of traffic congestion on our roads.
“Our commitment to providing safer and more efficient travel remains unwavering.
“It’s concerning to see passengers advising drivers to defy traffic rules.
“This behaviour is not only irresponsible but also dangerous.”
The traffic awareness initiative will continue until noticeable improvements are achieved.
Phiri noted that traffic flow has already improved along key routes such as the Mabvuku turn-off, Mutare Road, Kikman Road, Bulawayo Road, Simon Muzenda and Seke Road.
“We can all make a difference. Let’s promote safe driving and respect for road regulations for a safer Harare,” he said.
Chief Inspector Erina Litemwe, Officer Commanding Mbare District, reiterated the need for compliance with traffic laws.
“We will not overlook violations during peak hours,” she warned.
“Reckless driving by kombi drivers and private vehicle operators continually tests our resolve.
“Those who violate rules will face delays and fines after peak hours.”
During the campaign, H-Metro observed a motorist, a nurse, a police officer, and a police officer’s wife paying fines for violating traffic regulations.
