SOUTH Africa-based Zimbabwean Afro-pop musician Tsepiso Phuti, aka Tsepiso P, is using her latest single, ‘Eyamaphara’, to confront one of society’s most persistent habits – judging relationships based on appearances, wealth and social standing rather than genuine human connection.
Featuring Smuk DJ, the emotionally-charged track explores the complexities of love in the face of public scrutiny, delivering a message that affection knows no boundaries, labels or status.
The title ‘Eyamaphara’ draws from the Tsotsi taal word ‘Phara’ (or ‘Para’), a term commonly used to refer to a street child or homeless person, and is widely believed to be derived from the word, “parasite.” In many communities, the expression has evolved into a derogatory label directed at people perceived to be poor, socially inferior or unworthy.
Rather than embracing the stigma, Tsepiso P uses the phrase as the foundation for a powerful narrative that questions why society continues to measure people’s worth by their economic circumstances or outward appearance.
The song tells the story of a couple whose romance becomes the subject of constant criticism because outsiders believe one partner does not deserve the other. Inspired by everyday conversations and prevailing social attitudes, ‘Eyamaphara’ challenges listeners to reconsider how quickly they pass judgment on relationships without understanding the emotional bond between two people.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Tsepiso P said the single seeks to encourage listeners to value love above public opinion.
“Eyamaphara is a reminder that love should never be defined by what people think. Too often, society judges relationships based on appearances instead of the connection between two people. I wanted to tell a story that many people can relate to,” she said.
Originally from Bulawayo, Tsepiso P’s life journey has significantly influenced her music. Having relocated to South Africa, she has successfully balanced two demanding careers – one as a real estate agent and the other as a recording artist.
