A 31-YEAR-OLD man from Tsholotsho was jailed for stealing and slaughtering his neighbour’s goat, then trying to run away from the law with a full stomach and empty excuses.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of ZIMBABWE (NPAZ), on 11 July 2024 a villager released his herd to graze at Mhlahlo grazing land.

“A black and white she-goat did not return,” said the NPAZ.

Alarm bells rang and a village search party was formed. The hunt for the missing goat did not last long.

“The search led to the offender’s homestead where the victim identified the carcass of his missing animal,” said the authority without naming the offender.

Faced with hooves, skin and unmistakable goat evidence, the offender still tried his luck.

“The offender initially denied involvement in the theft, however the evidence was overwhelming,” said the NPAZ.

Things got even more embarrassing when the would be goat ninja tried to flee.

“He was apprehended but managed to escape while being taken to the police,” the NPAZ revealed.

The escape was short lived.

“The victim promptly reported the escape to the police, leading to his re arrest.”

The Tsholotsho man eventually landed where he belongs, in the dock and then behind bars.

“He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, of which three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour,” said the NPAZ.

“A further three months were suspended on condition of restitution of R1 500. He will serve an effective six month prison term,” prosecutors said the NPAZ.
