TURKIYE remains committed to partnering Zimbabwe on development projects aligned to National Development Strategy 2, the country’s blueprint for achieving its aspirations.
The European country’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Berna Kasnakli Versteden, made the remarks yesterday while handing over food hampers to 600 families in Katanga, Norton.
The hampers, which were a Ramadan gesture donated by the Turkish humanitarian organisation, TİKA, were distributed regardless of religious or political affiliation.
Ambassador Versteden said her country was keen to see Zimbabwe succeed and to raise the standards of living for its citizens.
“It is our pleasure today to be here for this initiative to bring food hampers to the people of Zimbabwe. This is from the heart of the Turkish people, our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe,” she said.
“We are very happy to continue this tradition. Now this is a priority for us to walk hand in hand and realise projects that are in line with Zimbabwe’s priorities.”
She said various Turkish organisations are undertaking projects across the country.
“We are, of course, very happy to do it in Zimbabwe. This is not the only programme TİKA is undertaking, but many more in various aspects,” she said.
TİKA is also working on modalities to support the Government in the planned renovation of Sally Mugabe Maternity Hospital in Harare later this year.
On the global geopolitical situation, recently inflamed in the Middle East by the US and Israel’s war against Iran, Ambassador Versteden said Türkiye and its citizens aspire for peace and tranquility.
“Islam is a peace religion, so in these days where there are different conflicts, war, turmoil in the world, it is important to give the message of peace and extend a helping hand,” she said.
Zanu PF spokesperson Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, who had been invited but could not attend due to other commitments, sent a message through his emissaries thanking Türkiye for its support to the country.
“Zimbabwe is a country of free choice for religious worship for all faiths. We thank our Turkish brothers and sisters for their hand to Zimbabwe,” he said.
Zimbabwe and Türkiye have enjoyed more than 40 years of diplomatic relations and expect to deepen cooperation, particularly in trade, agriculture, transport, health and education.
