Two bus drivers arrested for drug smuggling

TWO bus drivers from Mandeep Ndomboya Logistics were arrested early on Sunday after detectives from CID Karoi intercepted a Beitbridge-bound bus carrying drugs valued at about US$240 000.

Cletos Mutavu and Luckmore Farai, both aged 43, were arrested at the Kadoma Tollgate following a tip-off regarding the bus, registration number AHG 0408.

When police signalled the driver to stop around 12.20am, both conductors fled the scene and remain at large.

Besides the mbanje, police discovered 80 bottles of 100ml Astra Pain syrup concealed in black plastic bags.

The bus was escorted to Kadoma Police Station, where a search revealed 40 pockets of loose skunk mbanje with a total mass of 83kg wrapped in coloured sellotape and packed in cardboard boxes and sacks.

Besides the mbanje, police discovered 80 bottles of 100ml Astra Pain syrup concealed in black plastic bags.

Police in Mashonaland West Province have praised community members for their assistance, which led to the arrests and drug recovery.

They also urged the public to provide any information that could help locate the conductors.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, emphasised the importance of community cooperation in combating drug trafficking.
