TWO Harare men allegedly bashed a suspected thief, who later died from his injuries, in Kuwadzana 5.

Kelvin Madanhire and Tendai Leeroy Musiiwa were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo.

The pair was remanded in custody pending finalisation of investigations.

The State alleges that on Monday, at around 11pm, the now deceased was walking with the informant along a gravel road between Pillens in Kuwadzana 5 and Kuwadzana 5 Shops.

It is alleged that along the way they met Madanhire and Musiiwa, who stopped them and handcuffed them. The court heard that another suspect, Simbarashe Muzava, who is still at large, ordered the now deceased and the informant to lie down while accusing them of being thieves.

Muzava allegedly assaulted both men with a baton stick, while Madanhire and Musiiwa joined in, repeatedly striking them on the buttocks with a fan belt.

During the assault, the now deceased is said to have fainted and Musiiwa allegedly poured water on him, causing him to regain consciousness.

Madanhire and Musiiwa, together with Muzava, allegedly removed the handcuffs and ordered the two men to leave. The two ran towards Kuwadzana Extension.

Along the way, the deceased collapsed in a nearby maize field. The following day, at around 7am, the informant returned to the maize field and took his colleague to Kuwadzana Extension Base to file a police report.

He was referred to Kuwadzana Satellite Clinic for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
