ACTING Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Dr Biggie Samwanda, has urged players in the creative sector to sharpen their skills, acquire knowledge and mobilise resources to make the industry fully viable and sustainable.
Dr Samwanda made the remarks yesterday during the two-day Capacity Building Training on Shaping the Future of Zimbabwe’s Creative Sector Project which is being held in Harare.
Officially opening the event being hosted by community development organisation, Chenhaka Trust, he said:
“This timely initiative, facilitated by the esteemed UNESCO/EU culture policy expert, Mr Farai Mupfunya, aligns perfectly with our national strategies and pillars, particularly education, training, and capacity building.
“The creative sector is a vital component of our nation’s development, contributing significantly to economic growth, job creation, and cultural preservation.
“However, its full potential remains untapped due to limited access to skills, knowledge, and resources.
“This project addresses these gaps by equipping creatives and cultural leaders with critical skills in advocacy, policy analysis, communication, and negotiation,” said Dr Samwanda.
He commended Chenhaka Trust for conceptualising and implementing the initiative, which seeks to empower creatives across the country.
“The Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, under the CreativeACTIONs 2 project funded by the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe, has also demonstrated its commitment to nurturing the creative sector.
“This training brings together participants, including provincial arts managers from NACZ and creatives from various provinces, fostering a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration.
“The skills gained will enhance their ability to navigate policy frameworks, advocate for their rights, and contribute to the sector’s growth.”
He urged participants to seize the opportunity, engage actively, and apply the knowledge gained to drive positive change in the creative sector.
“Together, we can shape a brighter future for Zimbabwe’s creatives and cultural leaders,” said Dr Samwanda.
