THE construction of part of the Harare–Masvingo-Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and upgrading project in the Ngundu area is progressing well, with base construction underway.
So far, more than 550km of the 580km Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road has been rehabilitated, with only less than 30 km left and anticipated to be completed this year.
The rehabilitation of the Harare-Beitbridge Highway and modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post to bring about efficient systems aimed at reducing or eliminating delays are two of the signature projects of President Mnangagwa’s administration.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the development in a statement.
“Base construction is in progress along the Harare–Beitbridge Road Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project in the Ngundu area,” said the ministry.
“Another step towards a stronger, safer and more reliable road network, progress you can see on the ground, kilometre by kilometre.”
This development comes as the dualisation of a 16-kilometre section of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway at the Ngundu Escarpment is progressing well, with the contractor having constructed drainage and reinforced the road structure.
The dualisation will enhance safety and traffic flow as part of the Harare–Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and upgrading project.
The project involves creating a four-lane dual carriageway (two lanes in each direction) and aims to improve infrastructure and connectivity in the country.
It will also improve regional connectivity, support economic growth and facilitate smoother transit for passengers and freight.
The contractor has now constructed drainage lining along the stretch as well as reinforcing the road structure.
In October last year, a 7,3-kilometre stretch of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Road, located near Ngundu in the Mwenezi district, was opened to traffic.
This new section is part of the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading project for the Harare–Beitbridge highway, a crucial trade route for Zimbabwe and the region.
