ZIMBABWE is set to host its inaugural student-led climate innovation summit next month, with the University of Zimbabwe expected to become a focal point for youth-driven climate policy dialogue, green entrepreneurship and sustainable development initiatives.
The Zimbabwe Students Climate Innovation Summit (ZSCIS) 2026 will be held from June 25 to 26 at the University of Zimbabwe’s Diamond Conference Centre under the theme, “Bridging the Policy Gap, NDS2 and Climate Action for People and Planet.”
Organised by the Zimbabwe Congress of Students union (ZICOSU) and endorsed by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, the summit seeks to position students and institutions of higher learning as national solution hubs in addressing climate and development challenges.
The summit comes at a time when Zimbabwe continues to grapple with the effects of climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, energy insecurity and growing pressure to align economic development with global decarbonisation commitments under the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) and National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
According to organisers, the event will bring together university students, policymakers, diplomats, development agencies, private sector players and environmental experts to debate and propose practical climate solutions.
A major attraction of the gathering will be the Inter-University Policy Clash, a structured debate platform designed to stress-test Zimbabwe’s climate and economic policies through competitive academic engagement.
Participating institutions are expected to include the University of Zimbabwe, National University of Science and Technology, Midlands State University, Bindura University of Science Education, Great Zimbabwe University, Lupane State University and several others.
Debates will focus on contentious national issues such as coal dependency and energy access, climate finance and sovereignty, climate-smart agriculture, environmental restoration and green transport systems.
The summit will act as a talent pipeline for students as they enter industry and help the national NDC 3.0. Getting Human Capital that are aware and ready for industry meaning it’s a win for Industry and government NDS2.
The summit will also feature innovation showcases, technical exhibitions and policy discussions involving Government officials and development partners.
International participation is expected through diplomatic missions and development agencies, with ambassadors and representatives from Britain, the European Union, Rwanda, Zambia and Kenya among invited speakers, alongside environmental agencies and conservation organisations.
Ministry endorsement documents describe the summit as a platform aimed at moving students “from protest to prototyping”, encouraging practical innovation and structured youth participation in national policy formulation.
Zimbabwe Students Climate Innovation Summit 2026 chief executive officer Mr Benjamin Chimutengo said the initiative marked a significant shift in the role of young people in climate governance.
“This summit is about repositioning students from being passive observers of climate policy to becoming active architects of Zimbabwe’s green future,” he said.
“We are creating a neutral intellectual platform where Government, business, academia and development partners can engage with young innovators and policy thinkers on practical solutions that protect both livelihoods and national economic ambitions.”
Mr Chimutengo said the summit would culminate in the production of a Student Policy Position Paper to be submitted to relevant Government ministries.
“The climate transition is no longer an abstract conversation. Students are the generation that will inherit the consequences of today’s policy decisions, and they deserve a structured seat at the table,” he said.
He added that organisers also intended to use the summit to launch discussions around the proposed Zimbabwe Student Sustainability Fund, envisioned as an investment mechanism to support student-led green enterprises and climate innovation.
Senior Government officials and Cabinet ministers are expected to participate in the high-level policy sessions.
Organisers say the summit is expected to become an annual institutional platform hosted by the University of Zimbabwe to advance youth-led climate action and green industrialisation in line with Education 5.0 and national development priorities.
