Veteran performer Zenzo Hlaseka Tshuma, who suffered a stroke in August, is appealing for assistance from well-wishers to help cover the costs of his ongoing medical care, including scans and physiotherapy sessions.
Hlaseka, a revered figure in the performing arts scene, is among the pioneering artistes who proudly carried the Bulawayo and Zimbabwean cultural flag across the world. During his illustrious career, he worked with some of the country’s most celebrated groups and artistes, including Black Umfolosi, Sunduza Dance Theatre, and Albert Nyathi’s band, where he showcased his talent as a keyboardist and backing vocalist.
At the time of his illness, the Cowdray Park-based artiste was working with Black Umfolosi, continuing his lifelong dedication to promoting local music and culture.
Speaking on behalf of the Tshuma family, Khaya Arts director and long-time friend, Future Dube, said Hlaseka’s recovery requires daily medical attention.
“All the expenses that the family has to cover amount to about US$22 per day. We are grateful to several artistes who have already come forward to assist, including Ashley Mguni, Albert Nyathi, Leonard Zhakata, and Dumi Gumbo, who is based in the United Kingdom,” said Dube.
He revealed that Gumbo recently contributed US$660, which will cater for Hlaseka’s physiotherapy sessions for the entire month of November.
“We are appealing to the public and fellow artistes to extend a helping hand. Hlaseka is a legend who contributed immensely to the growth of our arts industry, and now he needs our collective support,” Dube added.
