A 31-year-old man, Thabo Ngwenya, was fatally shot while walking to the shops near the DGL5 Mine in Bubi District, Matabeleland North.

He was reportedly shot three times in the left side of his chest by a mine security guard.

Another man, who had been sent by his mother to the shops, was also injured after being shot in the right arm.

Witnesses told the Zimpapers crew that the owner of the mine does not want people walking close to the premises, and they claimed this is not the first time such an incident has happened.

The police later arrived to collect the body of the deceased who had been shot. As they were about to take the body to the station, the community stopped them, saying that if the police left with the body, the case would be forgotten.

The angry miners and community members then escorted the police vehicle carrying the body to the mine’s main gate.

They burnt tyres at the gate and began throwing stones, breaking the office windows.

After a long struggle, the angry miners and community members managed to force open the small gate.

They took the coffin and dumped it inside the guard room at the entrance. The police eventually left the body in the hands of the community and the miners, then drove away.
