SIX women from Mberengwa District in Midlands Province had a harrowing experience on Saturday when they were stranded on an island in a river after heavy rains upstream caused water levels to rise.

Mberengwa District Development Coordinator Mr Vafios Hlabati confirmed the incident.

The women, from the Machingwe area, had gone to the Mwenezi River to fish as a means of supporting their families when they were caught off guard by a sudden surge in water levels while they were busy fishing.

“Six women who were stranded overnight by floods at Mwenezi River have been rescued by an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter. The women, from the Machingwe area in Mberengwa, were marooned on Saturday night while fishing and were airlifted to safety this Sunday afternoon,” he said.
