Why study for final examinations?

THIS article comes rather belated to examination students. It could have come handy a few weeks before the onset of the public examinations. Wise students can get something from this brief.

At times people say it is better late than never. It is never late for issues of learning. No one likes to study, but it is essential to cementing materials and passing examinations.

Experts tell us that studying plays a critical role in personal development.
It fosters curiosity and trains our mind to think critically and examine information from all angles. The personal benefit of studying also extends to areas such as self-confidence and self-efficiency. Those who study and subsequently understand complex topics often experience higher confidence than those who let their studies fall by the wayside.

Studying also help in discipline. Setting aside time to study and reflect requires a great deal of self-motivation. Most of the time, students who make studying a habit tend to develop time management skills that are invaluable in academia and the work place.

Studying opens doors to various opportunities. Learning how to study for a final examination can translate into better grades, which lead to better qualifications and access to job opportunities. Do not procrastinate your studies.

Of course, you might want to do this for various reasons. This leads to last-minute panic and burnout because your brain needs time to process information. Why do students procrastinate? It could be lack of motivation, fear of failure, perfectionism and bad time management skills.

All students should be encouraged to read and study chosen subject. Some students are relegated to low performing classes because they are slow. But reality has shown that such students are low performing but they are slow and later in life do better than the so-called higher fliers.

Do not just repeat information. It is important to understand the underlying concepts, which will put you in a better position to apply, analyse and evaluate information.

You should practice active learning in the classroom. One of the most important strategies when considering studying for final examinations is paying attention in class.

This does not mean passive listening while you write notes, but actively listen to what your teacher is saying in class. Some students do not pay particular attention to teachers in class and others opt to boycott some lessons.
Experts advise that be mentally present in class.

Listen with intent, ask questions when necessary and make sure you are actually absorbing the content. This proactive approach can make things so much easier when you sit down for an actual study session. There is this common assumption whereby students are encouraged to treat studying like a marathon rather than a sprint.

A common mistake students make is trying to cram all their studying at once.
More effective strategies revolve around distributed practice instead of immersing yourself in hours of continuous study. It is more productive to spread your session over several days or weeks.

Where your study can have as much of an impact on your success and how you study. Different students thrive under different conditions and what may be conducive to one person’s study habits can be detrimental to another.
Your chosen environment should be free from distraction. A well-lit space with easy access to your study material is key to boost efficiency.

Form study groups. There is power in collective effort. Group study can be incredibly fruitful provided it remains structured.

When multiple brains converge to discuss a topic, students can achieve a level of understanding that is far deeper than if they were studying alone.

Studying on your own may allow for personalised peace and depth but a group study fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas. It allows for immediate doubt classification and can expose you to different interpretations of the same material.

Create a study schedule that works with your needs. Without a concrete study plan, you can easily become overwhelmed by the amount information you are supposed to cover. Conduct periodic self-assessment. Test yourself to gauge your preparedness.

Try teaching others just like a group study. Teaching others could be extremely helpful when you are studying for examinations. Conveying information to someone else reinforces your understanding of the topic, while explaining a concept will boost your confidence.

The following are the obvious points to remember about study methods: Create a study schedule — plan your study sessions to manage your time effectively and avoid last minute cramming. Practice past examinations.

Familiarise yourself with the examination formats and types of questions by practicing with previous examinations.
Stay organised. Keep your study materials and notes well organised to make it easier to review and find information when needed. These methods can help you prepare and succeed in your examinations.
