A WOMAN killed her five-year-old son, after giving him rat poison, which she also took, saying she wanted both of them to die so they could “end their suffering.”
Hazel Makuyana, a 26-year-old from Epworth, is alleged to have killed her son Mukudzeyi, after a row with her husband, Talent Nyakuwana, 41.
Hazel waited for Talent to go to work the following day, gave her son the rat poison, and also swallowed the same poison.
She then left her house and went to the Balancing Rocks monument, where she said she planned to die.
However, while Mukudzeyi succumbed to the poison, Talent did not.
She was lured to Parirenyatwa Hospital by her husband, who lied to her that their son was still alive, and she was arrested when she arrived.
The tragedy followed a heated argument between Hazel and her husband Talent.
When Talent left for work on Friday, Hazel forced Mukudzeyi to swallow the rat poison, saying she wanted to end their suffering.
Talent returned home at about 7pm and he found Mukudzeyi unresponsive, lying on the bed.
Talent rushed his son to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where doctors fought to save the boy’s life.
However, at about 6:14 am on Saturday, Mukudzeyi died.
Then, Hazel called Talent to inquire about her son’s condition, which ultimately led to her arrest. Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest.
“A sachet of rat poison was found on the deceased’s bed.
“Talent lured Hazel to the hospital under the pretence that Mukudzeyi was still being treated.
“Upon her arrival, she was taken into custody.”
During questioning, Hazel is said to have admitted to administering the poison.
She revealed that she had also ingested the poison with the intention to end both their lives.
She then went to the Balancing Rocks monument in Epworth, believing she would die there.
Mukudzeyi’s body is currently at Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
