THE construction of the Mabvuku Interchange is progressing well, with the contractor now making major works on an abutment, which is the substructure at the ends of a bridge to support the superstructure.
The project continues to move steadily forward as the Government continue to commit to modernising and expanding the national road network.
This project, situated along the busy Harare–Mutare Highway, is designed to ease congestion and improve safety on one of Zimbabwe’s key road corridors.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development said, “Construction of the Mutare road abutment is currently underway as part of the Mabvuku Interchange project. This marks a significant milestone in the development of the interchange, as abutment works form a critical component in supporting the bridge structure.
“Progress at this stage reflects continued commitment to delivering modern, efficient, and safe transport infrastructure,” said the ministry.
“Upon completion, the interchange is expected to greatly enhance traffic flow and connectivity along this route.”
The Harare–Mutare Highway carries heavy commuter and commercial traffic from Mabvuku, Tafara and surrounding suburbs into the city centre, while also linking Harare to Mutare and Mozambique.
At peak hours, the section is notorious for congestion and accidents.
Once complete, the Mabvuku Interchange is expected to provide lasting relief to road users.
The Mabvuku Interchange follows closely on the heels of President Mnangagwa’s commissioning of the Trabablas Traffic Interchange, which seamlessly links Simon Mazorodze, High Glen, and Chitungwiza Roads.
Similar to the Trabablas project, the Mabvuku Interchange is part of a nationwide initiative to ease congestion, reduce road carnage, and modernise transport systems in line with the country’s Vision 2030.
Recently, a detour was constructed at the Msasa Interchange construction project.
This critical phase is aimed at facilitating the smooth diversion of traffic while paving the way for accelerated works on the main interchange infrastructure.
Four more such structures are in the pipeline to ease congestion, reduce carnage and modernise the country’s infrastructure.
The interchanges will be at the Mabvuku junction, Harare Drive-Mutare Road; Harare Drive-Liberation Legacy Way; Nemakonde Way-Harare Drive; Sam Nujoma-Harare Drive; Westgate Traffic Circle; Kuwadzana Traffic Circle and Churchill/Liberation Legacy Way.
