Zari Hassan announces split from Shakib after 5 years

Ugandan socialite and reality television star Zari Hassan has announced the end of her marriage to Shakib Cham Lutaaya after five years together.

The couple, who shared parts of their relationship on the Netflix reality series “Young, Famous & African”, confirmed their separation in a joint statement posted on Hassan’s Instagram account.

The statement said: “Five years later, after much thought and reflection, we believe it is best for us to part ways due to irreconcilable differences. While this decision was not an easy one, we feel it is the right one for both of us.”

The pair thanked each other for the years they spent together and stressed that there was no bad blood between them.

“We appreciate the time we shared, the memories we created and the support we gave each other. There is no anger or resentment; sometimes two people simply grow in different directions,” the statement continued.

The former couple added that they would remain friends and wished each other well for the future.

“We value each other and remain friends with mutual respect and understanding. We sincerely wish each other happiness, success and all the best for the future.”

Hassan and Lutaaya made their relationship public in May 2022.

They tied the knot in a private Islamic nikah ceremony in Pretoria in April 2023 before celebrating with a white wedding later that year.

Their wedding became a major storyline on “Young, Famous & African”. The couple did not have children together.

News of the split sparked reactions online, with many fans sharing their disappointment.

One user wrote: “I actually thought the marriage was for the show cos the chemistry was off lol.”

Another commented: “Awwww, and I was really rooting for them.”

A third added: “My heart breaks for them; they really loved each other.” – IOL
