A ROUTINE working day ended in tragedy for a ZESA employee, who was quite popular in his neighbourhood for helping his community, after he was killed in a head-on collision.
The crash happened along the Harare-Chirundu Road last week.
Daniel Chaparira, 55, died after the Isuzu D-Max he was driving collided head-on with a Volvo FH haulage truck at the 188-kilometre peg on Thursday.
The accident occurred around midday.
There were three people in the Isuzu D-Max.
The Isuzu D-Max is said to have encroached into the lane of the oncoming haulage truck, as the driver tried to avoid a roadside fire, resulting in a head-on collision.
Two other people, who were also travelling in the Isuzu D-Max, were injured and taken to Karoi Medscape Surgery for treatment.
“They were rushed to Karoi Medscape Surgery but, unfortunately, the driver, Daniel Chaparira, 55, of Ruvimbo, Chinhoyi, passed on,” said Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera. “One was treated and discharged, and the other one was admitted.”
He said the driver of the haulage truck escaped the crash without any injuries.Insp Kohwera said both vehicles sustained extensive damage to their front sections, underscoring the severity of the collision.
He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving, particularly when confronted by hazards along the road.
Chinhoyi Mayor, Councillor Owen Charuza, who worked with Chaparira at ZESA, told H-Metro that Chaparira was more than just a colleague. “Even in Cold Stream, where he lived before moving to Ruvimbo, he was just somebody who was good to everyone.
“People would mostly seek his help when they had faults in their houses.
“It means they found Chaparira very resourceful. So it’s a big loss.
“For us at ZESA, it’s a very big loss. He was somebody who was good at cracking jokes. He will be greatly missed.”
