A total of 400 ambulances will be deployed to known black spots across the country, while others shall be stationed at tollgates in a deliberate move by Government to ensure victims receive help within the critical first hour.
In his keynote address during the commissioning of the Norton toll plaza last week, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona said the decision was taken with the full blessing of President Mnangagwa who has always been disturbed by the avoidable loss of lives through road traffic accidents.
“You will see ambulances stationed at our tollgates, however over and above that we will have 300 ambulances across the country for emergency rescue services in case of road traffic accident and these emergency rescue vehicles will be for free, expenses shall be borne by Government, all thanks to the visionary leadership of President Mnangagwa,” said Minister Mhona.
Ahead of the commissioning of the toll plaza, Minister Mhona launched the Festive Season Road Safety Education, Enforcement, and Awareness Campaign at Gosha Primary School near Juru Business Centre, Mashonaland Central.
In his address, the Minister highlighted the sobering context for the campaign, noting that the country records an average of five road fatalities daily and nearly 2 000 annually.
“These accidents cost the nation approximately US$406 million each year, representing about 3 percent of GDP,” said Minister Mhona.
