Zimbabweans embrace modern contraceptive methods

Over two million contraceptive users have embraced modern contraceptive methods in Zimbabwe, an official has said.

Addressing a media briefing in Harare on Tuesday ahead of the World Population Day, Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC)’s Family Health director Dr Bernard Madzima said Government is committed to widening access to family planning.

“We have a total of 2 203 million family planning methods users in Zimbabwe. Since 2012, we have had 510 000 additional users of family planning services. Government is committed to widening access to family planning services and we are striving for a budget of three percent of the health sector to be dedicated to the family planning commodities,” said Dr Madzima.

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) country representative Dr Ester Muia said countries are stepping up their commitments to provide girls and women with the information and tools they need to plan their families and their future and on the continent

She said on the continent, Zimbabwe has one of the highest contraceptive prevalence rates at 67 percent according to 2015 Zimbabwe Demographic Health Survey, but, however, said there should be no complacent.
