This past weekend was a testament to the vibrant arts and entertainment scene in Zimbabwe and beyond, as various shows and concerts took place, captivating audiences and setting the tone for a summer season that promises to be filled with exciting performances.
August, often considered a pivotal month in the entertainment calendar, seems to be opening doors for more shows and events, and artists are undoubtedly maximising this opportunity.
The warm weather and festive atmosphere that come with summer provide the perfect backdrop for outdoor and indoor events alike, and it appears that performers are taking full advantage of this.
From the energetic performances of songstress Feli Nandi in South Africa, where she was joined by a surprise guest appearance by American rhythm and blues singer Joe Thomas, to the emotional tribute to the late Zex Manatsa in Harare, hosted by his son Tatenda, featuring a lineup of talented artistes, the weekend was filled with moments that showcased the diversity and richness of Zimbabwean music.
The success of these events was tangible, with fans spoilt for choice as they navigated the various options on offer.
Of course, who would forget the ‘Doek and Slay’ event at Alex Sports Club in Harare, featuring performances by Nutty O, Freeman, and Alick Macheso, was a particular highlight, drawing thousands of women who were left wild and clamouring for more.
The town was painted with favourite sport jersey and tennis skirt donned by women who thronged the ground.
The event not only demonstrated the popularity of these artistes but also underscored the growing trend of fusion between Zimdancehall and sungura, as performers seamlessly blended styles to create an unforgettable experience.
Then Friday also members of the renowned Muparutsa family were live in concert at the Alliance Francaise, welcoming the return of brother Tendai Muparutsa, visiting home after several years and brothers Blessing (drums), Adrian (lead guitar), sister-in-law Dudu Manhenga (Muparutsa) and a spot featuring the youngest generation in the family represented by Thando, youngest son of Blessing and Dudu, on drums.
It was electrifying.
Back home in Zimbabwe, the band Color Blu, established in 2001 by brother Blessing Muparutsa and the dazzling Dudu Manhenga, which has included several of the Muparutsas (and Manhengas) over time, have become a household name with six albums under their belt.
The Muparutsa family is renowned in Zimbabwe, from their home town Mutare, to the capital and beyond.
With the bar set high by these weekend’s events, audiences can expect an exciting few months ahead, filled with performances that showcase the best of Zimbabwean talent.
The weekend’s shows were a resounding success, and as the entertainment calendar continues to unfold, one thing is certain – the summer of music and dance has officially begun.

Featuring a host of talented artists, including Selmor Mtukudzi and Clive Monomukundu who was he master of ceremonies, paying tribute to Zex Manatsa musical legacy, the event was a fitting tribute to a musical icon.
