THE Zimpapers Junior Media Club (ZJMC) participated in the Hatcliffe Educational Development Centre Career Day, giving learners first-hand exposure to careers in the media industry as part of the company’s flagship youth empowerment initiative.
The initiative is aimed at nurturing young talent, promote media literacy and prepare young people for the future.
The event brought together more than 20 professionals from various fields, including medicine, aviation, nursing, teaching, policing, the military, firefighting and construction engineering.
This provided learners with an opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths.
Through the Zimpapers Junior Media Club, learners interacted with media professionals who shared insights into careers in journalism, photography, broadcasting, digital content creation, public relations, graphic design and marketing.
Speaking at the event, Zimpapers representative Mr Ishmael Ndlovu said confidence, curiosity and passion were essential qualities for aspiring journalists.
“You should have a nose for news to identify a story and a passion for reporting. You must also be confident enough to speak on radio or television,” he said.
School principal Ms Albertina Rosemary Bwititi said the institution introduced the career day after realising that many former students, despite obtaining good academic results, were struggling to pursue meaningful careers.
“We initiated this career day after noticing many of our former students with good passes roaming around the area doing nothing,” she said.
“Our objective is to ensure that our learners study with intention, understand the career options available to them and know exactly what to do as soon as they finish school.”
The event also marked the introduction of the Zimpapers Junior Media Club to the school by Zimpapers Corporate Communications and Sustainability Manager Mr Pauline Matanda, opening opportunities for learners to develop media skills and participate in journalism-related activities.
Zimpapers also exhibited through its stationery division, Typocrafters, which showcased a range of exercise books and other educational supplies to learners and teachers.
