ZNA mourns commander’s mother

THE Zimbabwe National Army has mourned the untimely passing of Mrs Violet Rebecca Gonyora, mother of the Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, who was buried yesterday in Hwedza.

Thousands attended the burial, where every speaker described the deceased as having been a unifier who was a mother to all. She was 93.

Gogo Gonyora passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 20, 2025, at Little England Farm in Zvimba. Director Army Public Relations Colonel Hlengiwe Dube expressed the profound grief felt by the force.

“The Zimbabwe National Army, General Officers, senior officers, officers, men and women would like to extend their deepest condolences and sympathy to Commander Zimbabwe National Army Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi and the entire Tapfumaneyi and Gonyora family on the untimely death of their beloved mother and grandmother, Violet Rebecca Gonyora, on 20 December 2025.

“A mother and grandmother’s love is eternal. Hold on to that infinite love and let it be your guiding light. May her dear soul rest in eternal peace, and may the Lord be with your family during this extremely difficult period.”

Family members and associates described her as a “unifier” and a disciplined matriarch whose firm but loving guidance shaped the lives of her children.
