The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has rolled out a groundbreaking rehabilitation programme for inmates.

This programme, termed Evidence-Based Rehabilitation, marks a shift towards a scientific model of inmate rehabilitation by the correctional service.

Addressing a seminar, ZPCS Deputy Commissioner-General Musango, who oversees Corrections and Infrastructure Development, stated that the Evidence-Based Rehabilitation programme aims to offer transformative opportunities for inmates.

“Our vision is a society where prisons are not factories of bitterness, but schools of transformation. A society where former inmates return not as threats, but as fathers, mothers, workers, entrepreneurs, and leaders of change. By transforming our approach to rehabilitation, we are not just changing lives; we are changing the very fabric of our society,” said Deputy Commissioner-General Musango.

The Evidence-Based Rehabilitation programme moves away from a generic approach, employing scientific methods that tailor each inmate’s needs, ensuring that interventions are effective and data-driven.

Deputy Commissioner-General Musango emphasised that the implementation of this programme will play a critical role in achieving these goals.

The Harare Metropolitan Province, which hosts the largest population of inmates in the country, will serve as the hub for the programme.

“I’m glad that Harare Metropolitan Province is going to be the hub of Evidence-Based Rehabilitation,” Dr Musango remarked.
