THE 2026 edition of the Old Mutual Vumba Mountain Run is gathering momentum, with about 1 500 participants expected to take part in 5km, 10km, and 21km races in the meandering Eastern Highlands on Sunday.
Held in the Vumba’s distinctive mountain scenery, the annual event unites people from diverse backgrounds and fitness levels. Attendees range from competitive athletes pursuing victory to recreational runners and walkers.
The three race distances offer participants an opportunity to test their endurance, pursue personal goals, and experience the natural beauty of the region.
Beyond the competition, the event highlights environmental conservation through Old Mutual’s partnership with the Friends of Vumba Trust – a collaboration that connects health and wellness with the protection of Vumba’s unique natural environment, encouraging the community to preserve it for future generations.
Old Mutual Zimbabwe Group marketing, public affairs, and sustainability executive, Lillian Mbayiwa said all was set for the marathon event.
“We are ready to welcome participants to the 2026 Old Mutual Vumba Mountain Run. Whether someone takes on a new distance, works toward a personal best, or participates simply to enjoy the experience, we want them to leave with a sense of achievement. The event brings people together around active living while raising awareness of the Vumba’s natural environment. We want its benefits to extend beyond race day,” said Lillian Mbayiwa.
This year’s race carries added sporting interest as defending champions Isaac Langat and Fortunate Chidzivo return to defend their titles.
Last year, Langat won the men’s race in 1:10:09, ahead of Moses Tarakinyu (1:10:22) and Wayne Kabondo (1:10:34). Chidzivo claimed the women’s race in 1:24:24, followed by Miriam Sibanda (1:26:54) and Nobuhle Chuma (1:27:04). These past performances establish a strong benchmark for this year’s contenders as runners prepare to compete for top positions.
