Government has released $10 000 to assist the families of 10 people who died last week when a Green Fuel truck collided head-on with a commuter omnibus near Checheche Growth Point.

Nine of the 10 people died on the spot at Chimbambo Business Centre while the other died in Masvingo due to injuries sustained in the accident.

The accident was declared a national disaster barely a month after yet another horrific accident claimed the lives of almost 50 in Rusape.

The Civil Protection Unit chairperson for Chipinge district, Mr William Mashava, said the money was expected to be disbursed to the bereaved families this  week.

“The Checheche accident, which occurred on December 1, was declared a national disaster after the number of the deceased rose to 10. We will disburse the money once we have made withdrawals from the bank,” he said.

Meanwhile, Green Fuel has also availed funds to assist affected families.

“Green Fuel also assisted the bereaved families with an assortment of goods which were used during the funerals.

“Each family received coffin or cash equivalent, 10 litres cooking oil and 20 heads of cabbages,” he added
