AN INYATHI man who raped a mentally challenged woman and gave her ten cents to buy her silence was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Clayton Lunga (31) promised to buy jolly juice powdered drink for the woman (29) if she followed him to the bush.

He told a court the woman begged him for sex.

Lunga had pleaded not guilty to rape but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.

Magistrate Mr Crispen Mberewere said rape was aggravatory, especially when committed against people lacking capacity such as mentally challenged people.

“The court will seek to punish you adequately and send a message to warn people of a like mind,” he said.

“You are sentenced to 15 years in prison. Three years are suspended on condition that you do not commit a similar offence in the next five years,” said the magistrate

When asked by the prosecutor, Mr Busani Moyo why he did not notice something was unusual about the woman, Lunga said he thought it was the way God created her.

Mr Moyo said Lunga abused the woman on February 27 this year when she was left with her four-year-old nephew.
