10-year-old girl commits suicide as child (2) looks on, in Bulawayo

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe – POLICE in Bulawayo have launched an investigation into the tragic death of 10-year-old Nomvelo Phumuzile Mqhele, who reportedly took her own life by hanging at her home in Pumula South.

The incident has raised concerns about child safety and mental health in the community, as Ingutsheni Central hospital today held belated World Mental Health Day.

The day is observed on 10 October every year.

According to police reports, the girl was left in the care of her 18-year-old uncle while he visited friends. Upon returning to the house, the uncle discovered Nomvelo’s body hanging from a roof truss, with the two-year-old toddler crying in the room.

 

Bulawayo deputy Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said Nomvelo hanged herself with used a rope and a plastic chair to reach the height. An empty 20-liter container was also found at the scene, which she had used to climb up.

Neighbours were alerted, and the girl’s mother was contacted immediately. Authorities conducted a preliminary search of the scene and reported no visible injuries on Nomvelo’s body, nor was a suicide note found.

In light of the tragic event, the police have urged parents to actively monitor their children and maintain open lines of communication to identify any potential issues. They emphasise the importance of early intervention to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
