Philanthropist Dr Justice Mhishi has donated 100 wheelchairs worth US$17 000 to support people with disabilities, with 50 earmarked for the proposed Samuel Mutendi Zion University and the other 50 for a disability organisation under the Samuel Mutendi Zion Church.
The donation, made on Saturday at the Samuel Centenary Academy, is part of Dr Mhishi’s ongoing programme to provide mobility assistance to people with disabilities.
Dr Mhishi said the initiative was inspired by President Mnangagwa’s drive to ensure that no one and no place is left behind.
“We are moving around donating wheelchairs. Today I have donated to Samuel Mutendi University. It’s an ongoing programme,” he said.
He said the programme has already reached Kambuzuma, Gokwe, Epworth and Shamva, while Zimunya-Marange is next in line.
“There is need to create opportunities and empower persons with disabilities to enable them to stand on their own,” Dr Mhishi said.
Advocate Anesu Chirenje, chairperson of the Samuel Mutendi Zion University fundraising committee, said the donation will support the institution’s efforts to create an inclusive learning environment.
“This particular donation goes a long way, and the Samuel Mutendi Zion University appreciates it,” she said.
Advocate Chirenje said the donation is consistent with the National Disability Policy launched in 2021, the Persons with Disabilities Act introduced in 2025 and Section 83 of the Constitution, which provides for the protection of the rights of people with disabilities.
She said the wheelchairs will help students access the proposed university’s campus and lectures.
Mrs Charity Mutendi, a committee member of Rugare Community Relief Services (RUCORS), the charitable arm of the Zion Christian Church, said the donation will also benefit people with disabilities in the church and surrounding communities.
“At RUCORS, we look at life, dignity and opportunity, so the wheelchairs will change the lives of those living with disabilities in our church and communities,” she said.
