Another 11 deaths from Covid-19 were reported yesterday, 10 from Harare and one from Mashonaland West, taking the cumulative death toll up to 166 from a new total of 6 196 cases, including the 126 new infections reported yesterday.
But the Ministry of Health and Child Care reports that with 4 961 recoveries, the national recovery rate is now close to 80 percent and it is clear from the provincial totals, that the number of recoveries will be higher once all provinces, and especially Harare, have updated their totals.
Harare remains the epicentre of Covid-19 with a total cumulative total of 2 498, including 53 new infections confirmed yesterday, and 93 deaths.
The capital now accounts for just over 40 percent of all Zimbabwean cases, but 56 percent of deaths. But recoveries are just under 40 percent of the national total with more expected to be recorded soon as statisticians catch up.
South Africa continues to be the worst hit country in Africa, with 13 159 deaths from 611 450 cases, but with 516 494 recoveries showing the slowing rate of infection.
While still the fifth worst hit country in the world, Peru and Mexico are suffering higher infection rates at the moment and could overtake South Africa soon unless they adopt measures that slow infection.
