HWANGE School of Nursing on Friday held the first graduation since 2018 with a total of 110 nurses graduating with diplomas after completing the three-year course.
The graduates were drawn from the 2019, 2020 and 2021 intakes.
The School of Nursing, located at Hwange Colliery Hospital, last held a graduation in 2018 partly because of Covid-19 and financial challenges, although enrolment and training did not stop.
In a speech read on his behalf by the provincial maternal neonatal child health officer, Dr Nhamo Chivhuru, Matabeleland North Provincial Medical Director Dr Admire Kuretu who was the guest of honour challenged other mining companies operating in Hwange to emulate Hwange Colliery Limited in giving back to the community.
He implored companies to invest in human capital development through building tertiary training institutions in the rich coal mining town.
“Hwange Colliery Company trains general nurses as part of the corporate social responsibility. We take pride in HCCL as a mother company doing so much than just mining coal especially now that it has been reeling under the tight financial space, reconstruction administration.
“I implore other companies in and around Hwange to emulate the efforts by HCCL and consider giving back to the communities that they operate in. In line with the philosophy of the current Government of leaving no place and no one behind,” he said.
He congratulated the nurse training school for its resilience, adding that challenges as pandemics and financial crisis require adoption of new ways of doing business.
“Human capital development is key to building the nation and to management, may you not tire in supporting the school as it is a worthy cause,” said Dr Kuretu.
He urged the new nurses, most of who are already practicing to use the knowledge to better the society.
HCCL managing director Mr Blake Mhatiwa said the medical service division headed by chief medical officer Dr Nairos Deredzai was part of Hwange Colliery Company and envisions provision of world class medical service.
